Maria Fiatarone Singh
I am most looking forward to contributing to the discussion about the health
benefits of anabolic exercise for aging and chronic disease. Most research
regarding the health benefits of exercise has traditionally focused on
aerobic or cardiovascular exercise, with less attention given to alternative
modalities of exercise such as resistance training. However, growing
epidemiological and empirical evidence support the benefits of weight
lifting exercise for many different health-related conditions including
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, pulmonary disease, renal
failure, osteoporosis, stroke, cancer, and neuromuscular diseases,
amongst many other debilitating conditions. In addition, resistance training has been shown to lead to clinically relevant improvements in neuropsychological outcomes including cognitive function, depression, insomnia, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. My keynote presentation will summarize the rationale and evidence base for the role of resistance training in cognitive and psychological function and explore potential mechanisms of action and current gaps in the literature.
We are excited to announce that the ICSPP2017 Congress program is now available on the website.
Interactive Case Study Thu 30 Nov 2017 - Dismounted Soldier Performance Assessment: Going Beyond the Individual, Dr Graham Fordy (NZ) and Dr Dan Billing (AUS)
This interactive session is designed to challenge the status quo and meet the purposes of (1) highlighting which researchers and practitioners are working on individual and/or tactical small unit performance, (2) polling, discussing and debating the relative merits of assessment methods, and (3) facilitating engagement between labs / organisations working in similar areas.
Operational effectiveness is ultimately delivered by teams and better understanding the performance of these teams, and the contribution of individuals to team performance, is the focus of the session.
In order for you to prepare for the session (i.e. your homework assignment), please take some time to consider the following questions:
- Do changes in individual performance directly translate to changes in tactical small unit performance and therefore operational effectiveness?
- Is it possible to characterise the relative contributions of individuals to team performance in a military context?
- What research approaches could be used to make a more direct connection between the performance of an individual team member and the performance of the team?
It’s not too late to register
With only weeks to go, we encourage you to register now to secure your attendance.
